Phase 4
Summary
The Taino were the indigenous peoples on the Caribbean islands of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, and Martinique. Sadly, most of the Taino were killed after contact with European colonizers (beginning with Christopher Columbus), and the Taino language became extinct. The loss of this culture and language has had a devastating impact. Tech Fleet has partnered with Casa Areyto, a nonprofit working to save the Taino Language, to build a product that helps users learn and preserve the Taino language. Co-working with great sociolinguists from the Endangered Languages Project and a great advisor, this project is about preserving and revitalizing endangered/extinct languages.
